Thermal Bridge Material Schöck Isokorb®

11/2018

The German-made product, which is literally called " Schöck Isokorb® ", is considered as a building material that prevents thermal bridges. It is a load-bearing thermal insulation element that prevents thermal bridges on elements extending outside the building as cantilevers, especially balconies in buildings.

Thermal bridges in the cantilever sections of a building often bring along the risk of heat loss, moisture and dampness on the walls . " Schöck Isokorb®" load-bearing thermal bridge blocker building elements minimizes thermal bridges, prevents damage to structural elements, protects structural integrity and is a fastener for designers from reinforced concrete to reinforced concrete structure and / or wooden structure, from steel elements to steel elements. Ş. offers versatile usage areas to protect from thermal bridges in new buildings and balcony renovation projects.

Application in Existing Buildings

In existing buildings, if such an application has not been used before, heat losses escape from the indoor floor and walls of the building, in the direction of balcony console elements, by conduction, causing heat losses. Therefore, such an application is possible in new buildings or when a new console is to be released.

In existing buildings , precautions can only be taken with the complete thermal insulation of the balcony console surface in the exterior thermal insulation coatings. However, this process can be costly in both material and labor. For this reason, it is a very assertive statement to minimize heat losses in existing buildings, but very expensive solutions can be offered.

Thermal Bridge Possible Problems

In the thermographic photographs shown on the right, we can easily see the heat losses that will occur when a material such as " Schöck Isokorb® " is not used. ( The places shown in red show the places where the temperature is the most, and the places with the blue show the regions where it is the coldest .) In case the thermal bridges in the balconies are not cut properly, the heat escapes from the outside of the building as the balcony connection elements, concrete and reinforcement serve as heat conduction. Likewise, it should be understood that the rooms next to the balcony are getting colder for this reason.

Uncomfortable Living Areas

For this reason, it is possible to experience interior comfort problems such as the cold feet in the interior wall tiles, the inability to sit on the floor, and the complaints of the cold by the employees on the balcony sides.

Mold, Moisture build-up

Due to heat losses, if the building is not heated sufficiently, the indoor air temperature between the balcony and adjacent rooms may drop below the dew point; Wall and floor surfaces that cool down may cause the condensation of water vapor in the air. Thus, undesirable risks such as mold and dampness occur on the inner surfaces of the wall such as edges and corners. In case of constant exposure to condensation in the same local areas, it may cause serious damage to the building and endanger the health of the building occupants.

More energy consumption

Due to such heat losses in balcony and console connections, houses and offices need to be heated more , which is reflected in increased natural gas expenditures and heating costs and thus results in increased energy consumption.
