Before we make a sustainable material choice, we need some principles that we need to know. First of all, starting to evaluate by asking ourselves simple questions can help us make healthier or more accurate decisions.


Many definitions have been made about the concept of sustainability in many areas. The most general of these:

In the time passed from generation to generation, it would be beneficial to stop for a minute and look behind us by thinking about the life, environment and economic conditions that humanity will come and go. Even when we follow the daily news bulletins, we have begun to learn about the economic crises, environmental pollution, water shortage and famine in the world at an increasing rate. However, human beings did not and will not fail to find solutions.

In this sense, sustainability exists because it brings the ability to cope with the greater disasters that the world has and may encounter, and it is a concept that is the keystone of progress in all areas.

If we look at it from another angle;

Like everyone else, we want to live in an economically prosperous environment with a dynamic community open to developments, an environment protected by natural vegetation, and leave the conditions for future generations in this way and even beyond.

Why in terms of material?

Everything we look around is surrounded by materials that increase and facilitate our living standards that emerge in return for a knowledge accumulation from the past to the present. In fact, the structures and materials that have preserved themselves from history and have never changed are proof of how sustainable those products are. For example; undamaged castles, bridges, pottery and more… This is what sustainability is in a sense. Today, the tremendous advances in materials have kept the construction industry alive and made a huge contribution to its development.

Sustainability of the materials to be used in superstructure (housing, business center, hospital, office, shopping stores, etc.) projects in the field of construction will also support those projects in terms of environmentally friendly, human health-conscious and revitalizing the local economy.

For example, internationally accepted US-based LEED certificate and UK-based BREEAM certificate evaluation systems create a separate section in scoring systems, question the materials to be used in terms of sustainability, and decrease or increase points accordingly.

At the same time, it should be said that these types of products can be customer-friendly in the long run, even when viewed only as an economy.

Why is that?

In order to make an objective and concrete evaluation in a field, that subject must be measurable. This definition also applies to sustainability. However, achieving this measurability requires bringing together many disciplines and careful monitoring from start to finish.

For example; green building certification systems can evaluate factors such as materials, design, energy, water, standards and various measurement tools (such as simulation, modeling programs, water and electricity meters, indoor air quality control devices) in a multidimensional way, and as a result of these evaluations They can issue building certificates under the name of sustainability.

Why in terms of material?

Many criteria and standards have been developed to understand the sustainability of a material. Therefore, it is not possible to make an evaluation at first sight. At the same time, even if a material has met certain requirements and met standards, it may never have taken part in another assessment or it may be listed as low in that area. For example, no matter how environmental a material is, if it is not durable, it will not be accepted.

The primary goal here is to create awareness about the material. For example; Sustainable materials are expected to answer the following questions:

* Are there any harmful products in the material content?

* How much is the material obtained from recycled materials?

* Are there environmentally harmful products in the material content?

* Is production made to support the local economy?

* How long is the material service life?

* Have renewable energy sources been used during material production?

In this sense, aims to contribute to reaching clear, understandable and clear information.
