Turkey - One of the Sustainable Projects ...
Past - Present - Future
07/2015
The reason we opened this topic is that good things are happening in Turkey, good projects are handled by really well-intentioned people. This title and this part will always remain here so that these projects are news, well explained, and then add explanations about short projects, add web pages with details for those who want to, so that they are always in sight. And, we hope such projects will increase over time.
Previously made next projects are being carried out today and the future sustainable covering concepts projects 3N questions (What / Why / How) asking comment them to and taking review of some projects dealt with the concept of sustainability with'll add you, we plan to open the discussion.
How do we choose these projects?
We think that the project should not only affect a certain group of people but also a wide audience as possible. Because, a system that does not include society and social life, which is one of the foundations of sustainability, is a system that is incomplete.
Another title is the contribution of the related project to the environment and economy. These are the values that should be included in the projects to be selected, more or less. The success of these projects can also be discussed with the comments and / or the forum section.
What is a project?
It is an exemplary bicycle road project with a distance of 275 km at the end of 2014 and the target of which is to be increased to 1000 km by 2023.
Why can it be defined as a Sustainable Project?
Because although it is simple, it is a social, economic and environmentally friendly project that requires infrastructure.

Ecological City Project - Gaziantep
Potential sustainability concepts, 3N and comments:
What is a project?
The project is an ecological settlement project planned for 200000 inhabitants on an area of 3200 ha. In order to accelerate this project, 3 Urban Transformation and Development Project Areas (KDGPA) (Aleppo Boulevard KDGPA, Kilis Road KDGPA and Ortatepe KDGPA) have been determined.
Why can it be defined as a Sustainable Project?
Because it is a very comprehensive and developed project that has been taken into consideration in every aspect of the social, economic and environmental factors during the planning phase, and its vision can set an example in the region and even in Turkey.
How are these concepts achieved?
Environmental Factors:
* To benefit from renewable energy sources. It is stated that 60% of the heating need will be provided by renewable energy sources. For example; The use of pistachio shell, the famous product of Gaziantep, as fuel is among the plans. Thus, the peanut shell, which is the residual material, can be used in heating as biogas.
* Waste management and recycling planning
* Making water saving possible with water cycle management
* Preserving biodiversity, ecological balance and values
* To produce planned urban spaces aiming at an ecological approach without losing the agricultural and land quality in the region.
* Providing green transportation in the region, giving priority to pedestrian and bicycle use
Social Factors:
* Technical and social infrastructure (education, culture, health, recreation etc.)
* To make the region an attraction center with various cultural structures
Economic Development Factors:
* Reduction of monthly building expenses with energy efficient buildings
* To ensure economic development and recovery with strategies such as qualified housing areas, commercial areas, central business areas and tourism areas. For example, for this purpose, allocation of 55 ha of land as Central Business Area

Inonu University 5.3 MW Solar Energy Field - Malatya
Potential sustainability concepts, 3N and comments:
What is a project?
It is an exemplary project of a university that transforms the empty and unusable 12 hectares of land in the region into a 5.3 MW renewable power plant by using its own facilities and facilities.
This power plant will cover 33% of the electricity costs of the İnönü Hospital, according to the project calculations. According to these figures, an economy of approximately 300 thousand TL per month is expected.
The cost of the project was 21 million TL, 15 million TL of which was covered by bank loans. They plan to increase this clean energy contribution to 45% for hospitals by adding an additional 3 MW to the solar power plant.
Google Earth - Although the Solar Power Plant seems to be incomplete from the satellite, you can see the distance between the university hospital and the plant and there is more empty land around the plant, and you can see that there is more energy potential.
Why can it be defined as a Sustainable Project?
Because, as a university institution, instead of receiving allowances from the state for electricity costs every month, they will invest in one go, and in the long run they will both make an economy and provide electricity production without harming the environment in which they are located. Sustainability can be defined in this way as it is closely related to these factors.
How are these concepts achieved?
Environmental Factors:
* As everyone knows, solar power plants provide clean, quiet energy supply and zero carbon emissions.
Social Factors:
* In this sense, the establishment purpose and management of the solar power plant affects this factor.
* If we look at this project from the perspective of this project, educational activities within the university campus, social communities can be created, organizations and university students can be taught on-site applied systems during the year, as well as the opportunity to organize promotional programs for local people and more.
Economic Factors:
* As stated in the project introduction, a serious monthly electricity cost reduction is planned to be 33% in the first plan and 45% in the future.
* During this project, 7 full-time employees were employed after the project was completed with 70 local employees.
* Project warranty period is 25 years. According to the Rector, if it is considered that the power plant will meet its own amount in 5-6 years, it turns out to be a very advantageous project in terms of economy.
* In addition, considering that our country imports energy in general, this plant will contribute to the country's economy very well.

Industrial Symbiosis Project - İskenderun
Potential sustainability concepts, 3N and comments:
What is a project?
The general scope of the project is based on the following basis: It is possible that the waste material of an industrial-industrial organization can be the raw material of another industry-industrial organization, it is economical and open to positive contribution to the environment.
With the project, the understanding of Industrial Symbiosis (ES) , communication and cooperation between İskenderun and its surrounding companies started. Firms that had nothing to do with the products produced by each other came together, thus enabling new ideas to emerge and the creation of new business areas. For example, production waste fruit pulp in a fruit juice production facility can contribute to the source material for a feed manufacturing company. Another plant dealing with animal husbandry can provide source material for another plant producing biogas.
The explanation about the project on their website ( http://www.endustriyelsimbiyoz.org/amac/) is as follows;
Following the detailed preparatory work carried out in 2010, with the contract signed between the Turkish Technology Development Foundation (TTGV) and Baku-Tbilisi-Ceyhan (BTC) Oil Piping Company on December 27, 2010 , the "Industrial Symbiosis Project in Iskenderun Bay - Implementation Phase" was initiated.
Why can it be defined as a Sustainable Project?
In fact, it is a project that has no reason not to be a sustainable project. With this very comprehensive project, while the production waste is reduced, another company will be able to obtain source material from the waste product. With the realization of the application, productivity will increase, economic gain will be gained, and the negative impact on the environment will be reduced.
Source: http: //www.endustriyelsimbiyoz.org/
How are these concepts achieved?
Environmental Factors:
* The heat or electrical energy that a facility will spend to produce the production material will be reduced, since the appropriate waste material obtained from other companies can be used as a source. Therefore, energy will be saved and will contribute to reducing carbon emissions.
* Based on an example, obtaining energy from various wastes with high energy value can be utilized in the production of fruit and vegetables in greenhouses, from the waste heat energy released during this energy generation. In such a perfect cycle, many positive contributions are made to the environment.
Economic Factors:
* As stated in the video about the project, it offers companies a return on such investments in as little as 2 years. For this reason, it creates a great opportunity for the development of the local economy.
* It paves the way for R&D studies and the creation of new employment areas.
* With this project, which has the potential of implementation throughout the country, it is a project that can increase the competition, production and productivity capacity of industry, industry and manufacturing organizations, and help Turkey to move its position among developed countries in terms of imports or exports.
Social Factors:
* In the framework of the project activities, inter-company meetings are very important in order to make decisions about what and how to share, and to come up with new ideas.
* As it shows on the website, strengthening communication ties and reaching more people under the headings of infrastructure and preparation, information meetings and symbiosis workshops and cooperation network will expand the boundaries of the project and increase social activity, organization and exchange of views.

Electricity Generation from Landfill Gas - Istanbul
Potential sustainability concepts, 3N and comments:
What is a project?
In general, the project is to obtain electrical energy by utilizing methane gas, which is 21 times more harmful from greenhouse gases than CO2, from accumulated garbage heaps.
As technical information, these two projects, one of the largest in Europe and in the top 10 in the world, have a total area of 50 hectares, 33.8 MW , one on the Istanbul-European side, and the other on the Istanbul-Anatolian side, with a total area of 40 hectares, 14.5 MW energy. It is the totality of projects consisting of facilities with production power.
Why can it be defined as a Sustainable Project?
Until the 21st century, the areas where garbage islands were located, many environmental problems such as environmental risks, explosions, fires, stink, pollution of ground water resources, areas that do not represent any economic value, socially where people want to avoid, meant places. However, the fact that such projects are being implemented today has brought a completely different face to this situation. When we look at it from a sustainable perspective, concepts such as recycling, economic development - employment and its positive contribution to the environment fully support sustainability.
How are these concepts achieved?
Environmental Factors:
* In fact, the biggest contribution of this project is its positive contribution to the environment. Even if we cannot change our understanding of life based on increasing population and consumption today, this turns out to be a great solution to disposing of the huge urban waste generated.
* These potential areas, which bring enormous environmental damage both underground and above ground, can be prevented from mixing with the waste liquid, groundwater and soil by insulating around them. On the surface, the methane gases extracted from the garbage over time can be collected by pipes, collected in chambers, burned, converted into mechanical energy and from there into electrical energy and utilized. (To see this system in more detail, http://ortadoguenerji.com.tr/faışık-alanlari/elektrik-urluluk/yenilenebilir-enerji/cop-gazindan-enerji .)
Social Factors:
* It is an exemplary project in terms of establishing social responsibilities. It is a powerful project example that can be recommended for environmental organizations, foundations and organizations.
* Encouraging activities such as the disposal of waste separately (for example, plastic, glass, metal, paper) can be organized to encourage people to consume consciously and to facilitate the recycling process. For this, municipalities can organize direct incentive programs, starting from the departments. For example, starting each house as 3 different trash can campaigns, the waste collection process can be separated from the beginning, the products that can be recycled can be easily collected in the facilities and the processes can be accelerated.
Economic Factors:
* The advancement of technology and science also supports our economic development. Obtaining the energy that we depend on abroad from waste not only helps the country's capital to remain at home, but also brings the labor force required to perform these operations and the creation of a new employment area.
* Establishing new companies and conducting R&D studies are important both in terms of increasing efficiency in this field and creating new business areas.

Küre Mountains National Park - Kastamonu & Bartın
Potential sustainability concepts, 3N and comments:
What is a project?
Kastamonu and Bartin within the boundaries found in this park is being covered 37.7 hectares of Turkey in 1998, the Ministry of Forestry, UNDP (United Nations Development Program-United Nations Development Program) and FAO (Food and Agriculture Organization - Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations) with Küre Mountains was the first project implemented to protect biological diversity and encourage rural development.
The importance of this region is due to the diversity of forests that once encompassed the entire Black Sea , unique natural beauties, unspoiled geological and ecological structure, and a rich ecosystem inhabited by local people. For this reason, it is one of the 100 warm forest regions of Europe and 9 of Turkey.
How are these concepts achieved?
Environmental Factors:
* Environmentally main purpose is to protect the existing ecosystem that is already present. Therefore, any settlement is not allowed within the 37.7 ha National Park.
* In terms of tourism, it is recommended to spend at least 5-7 days in the National Park. The determined pathways are of great importance: Spending more time in the National Park and being in touch with nature, creating a minimum impact on the environment and encouraging tourists to stay in the vicinity of the National Park.
* Since 2008 , with the support of the Global Environment Fund , UNDP and the Ministry of Environment and Forestry have started to work with WWF-Turkey (Wildlife Conservation Foundation). PAN Park certification (European Protected Area Network) received.
* Unconscious logging activities were stopped. Approximately 15 thousand trees were planted in order to protect degraded forest areas.
* Solar panels and water heating systems were installed to reduce the wood demand.
Why can it be defined as a Sustainable Project?
Within the scope of the project, 123 villages in the vicinity of the National Park aim at the development of a total of more than 20 thousand local people with sustainable plans, social activities that will increase information exchange and protect the park, while promoting the region more and presenting it as a value is the sustainable values of this project. reveals that it has adopted.
Social Factors:
* Supporting various seminars, development projects, making regional development plans with local people, village headmen, development agencies, academics from universities, and how to actively carry out studies to make sustainable developments have an important place in terms of strengthening communication in the region and getting to know the region.
* Organizing bicycle tours throughout the year
* The surrounding villages are in constant communication with domestic and international organizations
Economic Factors:
* "The biggest goal in the protection of the region is to keep the region away from the copper mining and quarries and agricultural activities to open fields in a way that does not undermine the livelihoods of the people living in the region." (Wikipedia)
* Promoting the region to tourists with sustainable ecotourism
* Strengthening the economy of the people of the region by offering accommodation in designated places in the surrounding villages to increase the flow of tourists, the chance to examine the traditional life pattern and to try unique local food varieties.
* With the PAN Park certificate, it allows the fruits, plants and similar products grown here to be certified and sold in a more profitable way.
* As of now, paying lower fees for water heating thanks to the installation of solar panels in 300 family homes.
Note: In terms of economic development, apart from ecotourism, a plan can be made to evaluate the products grown as follows:
Production> Packaging> Marketing> Transport teams, suitable people from among the local people are determined and what can be done about these topics can be opened for discussion.

Haller Youth Center - Eskisehir
Potential sustainability concepts, 3N and comments:
What is a project?
The abandoned structure, which was built as the Eskişehir Fresh Vegetable and Fruit Market Building in the late 1930s and was evacuated in 1998 when the state moved outside the city, was reorganized by the Metropolitan Municipality (under the chairmanship of Prof. Dr. Yılmaz Büyükerşen), preserving the historical texture, and the Haller Youth Center It was put into the service of the people of Eskişehir as a bazaar, entertainment, shopping and culture-art center in 2000. (12)
Why can it be defined as a Sustainable Project?
The project is simply a restoration success. It is an exemplary project that supports how an old and outdated building can be revived without demolishing or distorting its design, and supporting environmental, social and economic development. Although the project area does not have a chance to affect large circles, the focus points, values, goals represent a remarkable understanding.
How are these concepts achieved?
Environmental Factors:
The historical structure of the Old Age and Fruit Market Building was largely preserved during the restoration works, in which details were carefully emphasized. (3) In this way, there was no damage to the environment. Deep foundation excavations have not been carried out with construction equipment. No visual and physical damage was done to the environment with iron-steel piles and high high concrete columns.
To look at it from another point of view, the savings from the use of less material, such as concrete, steel, etc., and the reduction of indirect carbon emissions due to production (embodied-energy) have also had a positive effect on the conservation of the environment.
Social Factors:
As stated above, after the project was completed, the bazaar, where people of all ages can go to Eskişehir, started to offer entertainment, shopping and culture-arts services in the center of the city. While feeling a historical atmosphere in the building, it has become one of the rare living spaces that offer a combination of sitting and chatting with friends, participating in theater events and shopping; this is the old Fresh Fruit and Vegetable Market Building, the new Haller Youth Center.
It is a heritage project that has managed to be a means to diversify and reinforce social activities, to make friendships, pleasant conversations and social ties closer to the future with meticulous studies and practices throughout the project, and will be more valuable as time passes.
Economic Development Factors:
Due to its location, this location, where people and mostly university youth pass by at all hours of the day, has been an excellent opportunity to increase the welfare of the local people with the right planning methods. Seeing and evaluating this well, the Municipality helped to open a wide variety of service areas such as food, beverage, shopping, entertainment, culture and art activities and create new job opportunities when the project was completed.

Establishment of Solar Energy Panels on Irrigation Channels - Şanlıurfa
Potential sustainability concepts, 3N and comments:
What is a project?
To meet the energy demands of the local farmers for irrigation by installing solar panels on the water channels in the region under the name of " Solar Cell Irrigation Channel Pilot Project " by the GAP Agricultural Research Institute (GAPTAEM) with the support of the Southeastern Anatolia Project Regional Development Administration ( GAP RDA). (1-4) As of 2017, a sample pilot study was put into practice with the placement of 56 units, each consisting of 11 panels. (1,2,4) In addition, an example of the system is from fixed solar panels in India. Although the system in Şanlıurfa moves in a north-south direction, increasing the refraction time of the sun's rays at right angles during the day will contribute to the energy production of more than 30% compared to the fixed panels. (6)
Why can it be defined as a Sustainable Project?
The project has a very high energy generation potential and is a very important start in this area. According to the statement made by GAPTAEM Director İbrahim Halil Çetiner , for example, only Mardin, the water channel width is 37 meters and the length is 220 km. has. Accordingly, approximately 814 ha area is suitable for solar energy production. (Total Area = 220.000 * 37 = 8.140.000 m2) The farmer living in the same area with the project is supplied with clean energy, while the energy required for irrigation is provided by solar panels on the water canals. By closing it, water evaporation can be prevented. Thus, in Şanlıurfa, which is one of the provinces with the highest number of sunny days, the people of the region will be more interested in such sustainable projects as they gain environmental and economic benefits from the solar energy they have. (3.6)
How are these concepts achieved?
Environmental Factors:
Irrigation channels in the region are exposed to large amounts of evaporation, especially in summer. Therefore, the amount of water needed evaporates and disappears. Thanks to solar panels, water canals will be covered and water losses can be reduced by evaporation. At the same time, keeping the water surface cool will help the solar panels installed on it to maintain their efficiency. Thus, reducing the consumption of finite energy sources such as oil, coal and / or natural gas and the environmental impact of carbon emissions can be reduced. (1, 6)
Social Factors:
Although the economic and environmental dimension of the project comes to the fore, it should be noted that the social dimension is also important. For example, there are cases of drowning in irrigation channels. In order to prevent such painful consequences, it is foreseen to cover the surface of irrigation canals and, in a way, prevent drowning cases. (3,6,7) As the project is a first in Turkey, organizing research and development, meetings and seminars is of great importance. As the project progresses, such social activities will prepare an environment for experts to come together, have constructive conversations and make decisions, in the light of the data from the Project.
Economic Development Factors:
One of the most important problems of the local farmer is to provide the energy required for irrigation with solar energy, which is one of the renewable energy sources. With the increase in field productivity and production, the development of the local economy will be the biggest gain. Power outages in the city will be reduced by supplying the energy to be generated from this project to the grid, and by selling excess electricity to the network, income from clean energy will be obtained. (7) It should not be forgotten that the Project will provide employment in different areas during the construction phase and later during the operation period.
